IN THEIR WORDS: THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF DISABILITY FOOTBALL AT CHELTENHAM TOWN – DEAN’S STORY
4th August 2026
Dean has been attending Cheltenham Town Community Trust’s Adult Disability Football sessions for over 10 years and has become one of the most recognisable and valued members of the programme. During his time with the club, Dean has not only developed as a player but has also grown in confidence, independence and social connection.
One of the biggest impacts the sessions have had on Dean’s life is the friendships he has built. Through regular training sessions, matches and tournaments, he has formed strong relationships with other participants and is now part of a close knit group of friends. Their connection extends beyond the football pitch, with Dean regularly playing FIFA Pro Clubs online alongside many of his teammates, helping him stay socially connected throughout the week.
The programme has also supported Dean in achieving an important personal milestone: gaining employment. Before becoming involved with the Trust, Dean was unemployed. Today, he proudly works for Cheltenham Town Football Club on the turnstiles during matchdays, providing him with valuable work experience, increased independence and a sense of purpose. This opportunity has helped boost his confidence and allowed him to become an even bigger part of the Cheltenham Town family.
When asked what he enjoys most about the sessions, Dean’s answer is simple: playing football, scoring goals and spending time with his friends. His enthusiasm and passion for the game shine through every week, and his positive attitude helps create an enjoyable and supportive environment for everyone involved.
Dean has also embraced the opportunity to represent the club in competitive football. He particularly enjoys taking part in tournaments through the FA Inclusion League and is extremely proud to have been selected as one of the team’s captains. This leadership role reflects the respect he has earned from both his teammates and coaches during his many years with the programme.
Reflecting on his experience at Cheltenham Town, Dean describes it as making him feel “very good” because he feels welcomed, valued and part of something special. Being involved with the programme has given Dean a strong sense of belonging, helping him build confidence, develop friendships and feel like an important member of the wider Cheltenham Town community.
Over the years, Dean has also become a familiar face across the club’s promotional campaigns and community activities. He is regularly featured in photographs, videos and social media content, helping to showcase the positive impact of disability football and the opportunities it provides for participants.
Dean’s journey demonstrates the power of inclusive sport to create opportunities, build lasting friendships, develop confidence and support people to achieve their goals both on and off the pitch. He is a fantastic ambassador for the Adult Disability Football Programme and an example of the positive, long term impact that inclusive football can have on an individual’s life.
